The Unsung Hero of Trump’s Success
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is an unsung hero of the Trump administration. Cruz originally ran against Donald Trump in 2015-16 within the Republican Party. Putting it mildly, it was a brutal campaign season. Presidential candidate Trump did not treat Cruz well. He made off-color comments about his father, wife and family. Cruz also lambasted Trump for not being a “real” conservative. But in the end, Cruz conceded and backed Trump for president.
Cruz could have been bitter and vindictive (example: Mitt Romney). Yet he chose to use Trump’s success to push a conservative agenda. He assisted in getting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 through, slashing taxes for middle class earners and businesses, kindling an economic revival. Cruz has gone to bat for a border wall/border security and has worked in the background to enact legislation protecting the American people. He used his expertise in constitutional law to defend President Trump against impeachment in 2020.
Senator Cruz is politically savvy and knew he needed to shift his approach in this new conservative coalition to be effective. He chose to put real grievances in the past in order to help his constituency. Ted Cruz should be lauded as a great man who has stepped up to the plate and made a play for the conservative movement.
